> Sustainable development as a strategic imperative

Wesizwe shares a commonly accepted view that a balance must be found between economic growth, social development and environmental protection. The company also believes that sustainable development should contribute to bottom line performance. This calls for long term changes in patterns of production and consumption, and for the active involvement of stakeholders in business.

In 2008, the company conducted an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). Environmental Management Plan (EMP) and associated Social Impact Assessment to evaluate the impact of the Frischgewaagd-Ledig Complex on the environment and affected stakeholders. The EIA report comprises 15 specialist studies. The evaluation of the possible impacts and benefits on both the natural and social environment was conducted in terms of the different stages of the proposed project.

The EMP includes methods and techniques that the mine will employ to minimise negative impacts and enhance positive effects of the project, as well as to promote the interests of the local communities. The company has translated this EMP into action, through environmental monitoring programmes and social engagement processes.
