It is imperative that the mining sector works to protect the long–term wellbeing and resilience of its biophysical environment. Accordingly, Wesizwe aims to:
- Manage and mitigate the impact on affected natural ecosystems;
- Contribute towards biodiversity conservation;
- Ensure effective and appropriate land rehabilitation; and
- Ensure comprehensive disaster management plans are in place.
In planning the mine, management focus has been on achieving efficient patterns of production and consumption through:
- The application of cleaner production principles;
- Waste minimisation, increased waste reuse and recycling;
- Sound management of chemicals and hazardous waste;
- Energy efficiency; and
- Responsible management of air, land and water.
Wesizwe has begun monitoring key environmental indicators so as to establish a benchmark against which it can measure the impact of activities once mining operations begin. This includes the monitoring of dust-fall which measures the fallout of windblown settleable dust using modified methods prescribed by the American Society of Testing and Materials standard for collection and analysis of dust-fall (ASTM D1739).
